Venice, Italy—also known as the “Bride of the Sea”—is like traveling back in time. It’s architecture and unique canals lead to a much slower pace of life in comparison to the United States. If you’re thinking about experiencing Venice, here are some top things to do:
- Gondola Ride
When the weather is at its most beautiful, spending time on a gondola ride while being serenaded by a man who is propelling you through the nooks and crannies of the canals of Venice is an incredible experience, and is the top tourist activity to do while in Venice. My recommendation? Bring your loved one to add in a little romance to your quintessentially-Venice experience.
- Murano Glass Factory
While visiting the Murano Glass Factory, the opportunity to see a master complete their day to day work is an eye-opening experience to the immense amounts of hard work and detail that go into producing some of the most amazing glass products that Italy as a whole has to offer. The tradition of Murano glass making can be traced back to 982 and is still one of the most respected trades in Venice. Upon entering the factory, visitors are shown a master, as well as the trade process that an apprentice goes through while at work as he or she creates a spectacular and detailed work of art. You are then led through the factory, ending with the chance to view and even purchase final pieces that have taken hours upon hours to complete.
- Mark’s Basilica
St. Mark’s Basilica is a CANNOT miss historical landmark in Venice. Locally known as the “Basilica San Marco,” the Basilica is rich in history and religion. Filled to the brim with art and astounding architecture, visitors can stand for hours in awe at the incredible craftsmanship and planning that went into the construction of this astounding building. After walking around St. Mark’s Basilica, it’s less than a five-minute walk to the Grand Canal where there are the most spectacular views. It’s highly recommended to walk along the Grand Canal at sunset—you’ll be treated with incredible views beyond your wildest dreams.
